Is CBD just the latest “it” ingredient in the spa world, or is there actual science happening under the surface? As your resident Spa Nerd, you know I can’t resist a deep dive into the physiology of why things work!
For this week’s “Thoughtful Thursday”, let’s look at why CBD and massage are a match made in homeostasis heaven.
The “Master Regulator”: Your Endocannabinoid System
To understand CBD, we first have to talk about the Endocannabinoid System (ECS). Discovered in the early 90s, this system is like the “symphony conductor” of your body. Its main job?
Homeostasis. —keeping everything from your mood and sleep to your pain response and immune function on an even keel.
When we experience stress or physical trauma, the ECS kicks in to bring us back to balance. Our bodies actually produce their own “endocannabinoids” (like anandamide, which causes that famous “runner’s high”). CBD is a plant-based version (a phytocannabinoid) that helps support this internal system.
Why CBD + Massage?
You might be wondering:

“If I’m just putting it on my skin, does it actually do anything?”* The answer is a nerdy “Yes!” Even though CBD has a high molecular weight (meaning it’s unlikely to hit your bloodstream and cross the blood-brain barrier), your skin is packed with receptors like TRPV-1, which modulates pain and inflammation.
When we incorporate CBD into a session, we are targeting those receptors directly to:
Reduce Inflammation: Helping the “fire” in the tissue die down.
Interrupt Pain Signaling: CBD is an antinociceptive, meaning it helps dampen the nervous system’s response to painful stimuli.
Promote Muscle “Loosening“:It encourages a deeper state of relaxation, allowing us to get more productive work done without your body fighting the pressure.
The “Will I Get High?” Question
This is the big one! Hemp-derived CBD (which is what we use) must contain 0.3% THC or less.
THC is the compound that creates a psychoactive “high.”
CBD is non-intoxicating.
Using a CBD topical is about localized relief and systemic calm, not a change in your state of mind. It’s a legal, botanical tool that helps us move from reactive treatment (fixing the pain) to proactive wellness (maintaining balance).
Putting it into Practice
Whether you’re dealing with chronic aches or just need to hit the “reset” button on a stressful week, CBD can be a powerful ally in your bodywork routine.
Got questions about the science? Drop them in the comments! I love a good nerd-out session. 🤓✨
